Those of you who have or even experienced problems with your laptop webcams don’t need to worry. Now you can use your cellphone as a webcam, of course, with a better camera quality than the laptop’s built-in webcam.

If you need an external webcam you can actually go and buy a new webcam. But if you don’t want to spend money or don’t need it in the long run, you can take advantage of your smartphone. If you want to give it a try, you can turn your smartphone into a wireless webcam for your PC and of course with much clearer and better camera quality.

How to Use Phone as Webcam (Android/iPhone)

For Android Phone: DroidCam

Android users can try a free app called DroidCam to turn it into a wireless webcam. The free version has everything you need to get started, although you can upgrade by paying $5.49 to DroidCamX. One of its paid features is adding 720p/1080p videos with HD Mode, and it also removes small banner ads.

To get started, you need two pieces of software. First, the DroidCam Android app for your phone which you can download via the Google Play Store and Windows client from the Dev47Apps site.

Once both are installed on your device, make sure your computer and phone are on the same Wi-Fi network. Open the DroidCam Android app on your phone, then you will get an IP address, like 192.168.1.91. Then you enter on the desktop application to connect the two.

Make sure to check the Audio box if you don’t have a microphone on your PC. To get started click the Start button, and you will start to connect. Most video chat apps should recognize DroidCam as a valid webcam, though you may need to restart your video chat app.

Plus, you can adjust a few things in the settings, such as which camera you want to use (front or back). Which microphone do you want to use (camera or speakerphone), and some battery-saving features? But be aware that it may not be as good as a traditional webcam.

For iPhone Users: EpocCam

If you have an iPhone, EpocCam is the recommended app to turn it into a webcam. However, the free version includes annoying ads and very few features. So you almost need a paid upgrade of 7.99 US Dollars. With the upgrade, you get microphone support, HD video, USB connection, and zoom/focus adjustment.

To use EpocCam, download the EpocCam app to your iPhone and download the drivers for Windows or macOS. You may need to restart your computer after installing the desktop software. After you restart, you can launch the EpocCam Viewer application on your computer to see if the application is working or not.

As long as both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, or connected via USB, they should be connected without any additional steps. EpocCam will appear like a webcam for Zoom, Hangouts, or any other video chat app you may be using.
